Ugandan athlete Rebecca Cheptegei who tragically suffered severe burns in a domestic violence incident has passed away.
Cheptegei, a marathon runner who represented Uganda at the Paris Olympic Games, succumbed to her injuries at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret.
Cheptegei was admitted to the intensive care unit after sustaining burns on 80 percent of her body in an alleged attack by her boyfriend, who reportedly doused her with petrol and set her ablaze.
The incident which also left the boyfriend with burn injuries has shocked the community and raised serious concerns about domestic violence.
“Unfortunately, we lost her after all her organs failed last night,” MTRH acting Director Dr. Owen Menach confirmed as per The Star.
The tragic incident occurred on Sunday when Marangach allegedly sneaked into Cheptegei’s home with a five-litre jerrican of petrol.
Cheptegei, who had gone to church with their children, returned home only to be confronted by the violent attack.
According to witnesses, Marangach poured petrol over her and set her on fire, triggering screams that alerted neighbors. Neighbors responded to the commotion, managing to rescue both Cheptegei and Marangach, who were later rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
Despite being admitted to the ICU at MTRH, where medical personnel fought tirelessly to save her, Cheptegei’s condition worsened.
She had been scheduled for airlift to Nairobi for specialized treatment early on Friday, but her condition deteriorated before the transfer could take place.
Cheptegei’s passing marks a tragic end for a woman who had worked tirelessly to bring pride to her country through her athletic achievements.
The marathon runner had been a beacon of hope for many, representing Uganda on the global stage, most notably at the Paris Olympic Games. Her shocking and untimely death has left many of her fans, family, and fellow athletes devastated.
Authorities have confirmed that an investigation into the attack is ongoing. Marangach, who is still receiving treatment for his injuries, will likely face charges in connection with the attack.
