Why Shericka Jackson has a chance to defend her 200m Diamond League crown despite injury setback

Shericka Jackson has a chance to compete in the women’s 200m at the Diamond League Meeting final in Brussels following the points she accumulated before her injury.

The two-time world 200m champion had accumulated 20 points from her three Diamond League races before she was forced to end her season unprecedently.

Jackson opened her season with a win at the Diamond League Meeting in Rabat, Morocco before finishing fifth at the Diamond League Meeting in Oslo. She bounced back to winning ways at the meeting in Stockholm where she claimed top honours.

According to the standings as per the Diamond League meeting organisers, Jackson is second on the table behind American Anavia Battle who has 22 points. Daryll Neita and Tamara Clark are second and third with 19 and 14 points respectively. The table was unveiled before the Diamond League Meeting in Rome.

In the Diamond League, athletes usually score points based on their placement in their event. The winners of events earn eight points with the athletes who finish second earning seven points. The trend continues with the eighth athlete to cross the finish line earning a point.

The points are collected through the season and the most successful athletes in each event are invited to the annual Diamond League Final.

On her part, after the Diamond League in Stockholm, she raced at the Jamaican Olympic trials, taking wins in the 100m and 200m before heading to the Gyulai István Memorial, a Hungarian Athletics Grand Prix.

In Hungary, she pulled up an injury mid-race and exited the stage, failing to compete in any other meet before the Olympics. Jackson then pulled out of the 100m and 200m at the Paris Olympic Games and later confirmed that she would not be in action in the women’s 4x100m.
