Mary Moraa rans tactical race to claim top honours at Zurich Diamond League

World champion Mary Moraa ran a tactical race to claim her third Diamond League win of the season in Zurich on Thursday.

Moraa opted to let her competitors take the lead in the first lap before she unleashed a great finishing kick to floor them in the final 400m.

The Olympics bronze medallist crossed the finish line in 1:57.08 as Great Britain’s Georgia Bell finished second in 1:57.94 while American Addison Wiley completed the podium in 1:58.16.

Fresh from breaking the 600m world record in Berlin last weekend, Moraa did not seem tired from her exertions on Sunday but decided to conserve her energy until when it mattered.

Shafiqua Maloney took the lead and tried to burn out her opponents but she run out of steam in the second lap, to finish seventh, as Moraa made light work of the rest of the cast.

It is now three Diamond League wins this season for Moraa after emerging victorious in Doha and Lausanne while finishing finished second at the Prefontaine Classic, the Eugene Diamond League.

The victory also took Moraa joint top on the 800m leaderboard with 31 points, same as Britain’s Jemma Reekie, who finished fourth to claim five more points.

Moraa will now head to the Diamond League Final in Brussels in confident mood, hoping to claim the $30,000 (Ksh3.9 million) prize and the Diamond League Trophy after her disappointing fourth place last year.
