Michael Olunga: Al Duhail provide injury update on Harambee Stars captain

Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga is set to return from injury after his club Al Duhail confirmed that he will be involved in Saturday’s league match.

Olunga missed Kenya’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations against Zimbabwe and Namibia this month owing to an injury but his club has confirmed that he was among the beneficiaries of the international break as he used the time off to recover.

Al Duhail take on Al Wakrah on Saturday as coach Christophe Galtier looks to maintain their perfect start to the season and he confirmed that his talisman will be in the squad.

“The international break helped us prepare Michael Olunga from injury as he became ready to participate in matches,” said Galtier.

“The international break helped me a lot in assessing the level of many players and using some young ones in the cup matches.”

Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat had explained that the striker was waiting for a scan to determine the extent of his injury before he was ruled out of the two matches.

“It is unlikely that Michael Olunga will participate in the first game. He is scheduled to have an MRI. Still, as I mentioned, the odds are slim. Numerous players have already left us. We must come up with solutions,” Firat told the media last week.

Olunga is Al Duhail’s main striker as he has topped the scoring charts ever since he signed for the club in January 2021.

The striker won the golden boot award in 2021-22 and 2022-23 and is already off the mark this season after bagging a hat-trick on the opening day as Al Duhail thrashed Qatar SC 6-1.

Al Duhail are top of the standings after winning their first three games as they begin a quest to reclaim their title.
